AWARD OF THE SILVER STAR

TC 320. The following AWARD is announced.

HOTTELL, JOHN A. CAPTAIN INFANTRY United States Army Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry

Awarded: Silver Star

Date action: 2 June 1969

Theater: Republic of Vietnam

Reason:

For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Hottell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 2 June 1969, while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 8th Cavalry during combat assault mission in Long Kahn Province, Republic of Vietnam. After Company A was ambushed, Company B was air assaulted into the area to come to their aid and Captain Hottell led them on a counter-attack. As they entered the enemy bunker complex, they came under heavy fire from automatic weapons, rockets, and snipers. They suffered many casualties, several in leadership positions, and were pinned down. Captain Hottell exposed himself to the intense enemy fire as he moved to each of the widely separated platoons to reorganize and lead them to safety. He quickly assessed the situation, placed competent men in command of each element and bolstered the morale of the beleaguered men. In addition, he personally carried three wounded men through heavy fire to the rear. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest tradition of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Authority: By direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 9 July 1918.
